PLANO — The winter storm led to a ceiling collapse at Minnie's West Plano Food Pantry, and the damage couldn't have come at a worse time.
Water from heavy rain accumulated on the roof of the organization's warehouse in the 3100 block of Independence Parkway on Thursday.
The pantry was in the process of distributing Christmas dinners for the needy when the ceiling caved in, drenching boxes of food supplies with rain water.
Cheryl Jackson is devastated. She is president of the Giving Movement, which runs Minnie's Food Pantry. The organization has distributed food to more than 3,000 people in December.
"People came in all week saying I was their only source for food," Jackson said.
The food that got wet must now be thrown out.
"It's ironic that this is an act of God, when that's who I pray to to give me this place," she said. "It's Christmas Eve, and I'm a praying woman, but this hurts."
The damage comes just after a $10,000 contribution from Los Angeles Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, who lives in North Texas. The money was earmarked for the pantry's Christmas dinner distribution.
"It destroys a part of my dream," Jackson said.
